3 Suggestions for a "Safer" Winter Getaway

Admittedly, it’s difficult to recommend travel with the recent resurgence of Covid infections. But the winter season is upon us, and for those of you feeling the need to get way (and comfortable getting on a plane), here are 3 suggestions for a relatively safe winter experience. And if not for this year….certainly consider them for your future travels.

Dominican Republic – Casa de Campo

The DR currently has no entry testing requirements and are offering a free Health Insurance plan covering Covid related travel issues.

Casa de Campo is a 7000 acre gated community with private villas and access to every conceivable activity you could think of. The villas have 3 to 11 bedrooms, perfect for sharing with family or friends. Each has a fully stocked kitchen, indoor and outdoor living space and a private pool. Contact me to arrange other amenities like private maid service, butler, concierge, welcome refreshments on arrival and daily breakfast prepared for you at your villa. You’ll also get complimentary golf carts to transport you to your activities or to explore the estate. There’s a mini-market on property and a larger grocery store one mile from the property. But if you’re (understandably) not into cooking, there are multiple restaurants, and even food trucks, on-site to order for take-out.

This resort is especially attractive to golf enthusiasts. It’s signature golf course, Teeth of the Dog, has been ranked #1 in the Caribbean, and 27th in the World. There are a total of 3 Pete Dye courses on the property with gorgeous ocean views. A great option for a group of golf buddies to share a villa and enjoy the beautiful weather. Even if you’re not a golfer, it might be worth following along in the golf cart, with a gin & tonic or pina colada in hand, of course!

But if golf is not your game, there remains so many other activities to enjoy for all ages. So many, in fact, it’s a challenge to list them all:

Beaches (loungers & umbrellas) Equestrian Center (lessons, indiv. & group trail riding)

Tennis (lessons & clinics) Sport Fishing

Spa Excursions off property (cigar factory, zip lining)

Children’s Activities Children’s Real Madrid Soccer Camp

Movie Theater w/ 3 cinemas Cooking Classes (private)

(health protocols in place)

Shopping Boutiques on premises

(clothing, fine art, wine)

And then there’s my favorite: lounging by the water with a good book in hand!

Caribbean – Private Boat Charter

Imagine yourself on a private catamaran sailing through the turquoise water of the Caribbean Sea with captain, crew & personal chef. Each cabin has an ensuite bathroom with shower and even daily housekeeping. All meals, snacks, alcohol and water toys are included. The catamarans can hold up to 10 people, a great option for a group of friends or family. Sailings can be anywhere from 5-14 nights. You’ll stop at various islands or secluded beaches – as this is a private sailing, you’ll be able to customize to your needs and desires. Activities include diving or snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, paddle surfing, swimming, or just relaxing on deck with a cocktail of your choice. The price per couple is quite reasonable when the boat is shared with others. Of course, if you’re so inclined, you can always upgrade to a grander yacht!

Montana Ranches

I did a lot of research into ski resorts for this winter, but came up with few good options due to Covid restrictions and limits on lift tickets and ski passes. So, naturally, I looked for an alternative for all of you “snow lovers”. There are several all-inclusive, casually luxurious ranch resorts out west. Their primary attraction: the accommodations are all private homes & cabins, and they specialize in adventure, seclusion and wellness.

Choose between 1-3 bedroom homes, all with fireplaces or wood burning stoves, porches with hot tubs overlooking mountain views. Your rate includes all meals and there are fine and casual dining establishments on site, but all are offering “in home” dining at this point.

There are many included outdoor winter activities (and some with an additional charge) that can be done privately or in groups, all take place on their thousands of acres of private property with their own guides. Equipment is included and regularly sanitized. Enjoy snow tubing, X-country skiing, snow shoeing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, fat tire electric bikes (winter bike riding), or winter horseback riding. Try skijoring, where a skier or snowboarder is pulled across open terrain by a horse or by dogs (“think” winter waterskiing!).

One resort offers alpine skiing with complimentary transportation to the mountain, ski passes, ski/ snowboard rentals and a packed (gourmet) lunch. Another will give you complimentary use of a Lexus SUV during your stay. And as a Virtuoso advisor, I can offer you additional ”resort credits” for those extra special adventures.

Looking for something different? There are plenty of other options. Call me - I'd love to discuss them with you!
